What Does Hail Damage Look Like?

Hail damage on shingles usually shows up as small, dark, soft bruises where the granules have been knocked loose, sometimes with a slightly shiny center where the mat is exposed. It rarely looks like dramatic holes or cracks from the ground. Because hail damage can be subtle, the only reliable way to confirm it is a hands-on roof inspection.

Bruising, not always holes

Most people picture hail damage as visible cracks or punctures, but on asphalt shingles it more often looks like small circular bruises. Pressing on one of these spots may feel slightly soft or spongy compared to the surrounding shingle. From the ground, these bruises are nearly impossible to spot, which is one reason hail damage often goes unnoticed for months.

Granule loss and exposed mat

Hail impact knocks granules loose, sometimes leaving a small shiny or dark patch where the asphalt mat underneath is exposed. Over time, exposed mat accelerates wear in that spot, and enough scattered impact points can shorten the life of the whole roof section even if no single spot is a full breach yet.

Other materials show it differently

Metal roofing can show small dents from hail, which are mostly cosmetic but worth noting for a claim. Tile roofing can crack or chip, especially at the edges, and a cracked tile is a real entry point for water even if it looks minor. Soft metals like vents, gutters, and AC fins often show hail dings clearly and can be a useful clue that the roof itself was hit too.

We walk the roof and check shingles, flashing, vents, and gutters up close, and photograph anything consistent with hail impact. Hail damage claims can be tricky because normal wear and hail bruising can sometimes look similar from a distance, so clear, close-up documentation matters.
